Under: Understanding the Mind

Depiction of Franz Anton Mesmer
by Dany Leblanc C.H.
The thought of Hypnosis being mind control has always been funny to me because if it where I would only need to Hypnotize one very rich person and then I would be set for life... Unless I choose world domination... then I might do a group hypnosis session at a United Nations meeting or something. The thing is There is nothing further than the truth than Hypnosis being a mean to control anyone's will or behavior!
It always makes me laugh when I see an ad that is pushing a Hypnosis and mind control book or program on you. The nature of hypnosis being a focused state of concentration where one can hear and remember everything that is said goes a long way to explain why it simply is not mind control but lets explore it a little more...
Suggestibility
Suggestibility or suggestion is a great way to call the tidbits the hypnotist gives you as he suggests a certain behavior or action. That means that you can reject it, misunderstand (then do something else) or act upon it. One may act upon a suggestion that seems ridiculous when hypnotized as part of a stage show but keep in mind people volunteer and sometimes even run up to the stage! They obviously want to obey the suggestions! Now in a clinical setting imagine someone who would really want to stop smoking, loose weight, get over a nervous tic or anything else really...the person obviously wants help with what they come for, now imagine how dramatic those changes can be! Now would a professional Hypnotist like myself ask you to do something foolish when you come to stop smoking would it work...no, you would probably just emerge yourself and leave. Hypnosis is all about trust ans expectancy so if your at a show expecting to just have fun and use your imagination you would do all those things and enjoy them because the context makes it all appropriate. On the other hand if you come for clinical hypnosis you would simply expect to be treated appropriately and for that reason would reject any foolish suggestions. When your hypnotized in a clinical setting respect should be the Hypnotist's number one priority and as such I would suggest that you choose a Hypnotist that is certified and a member in good standing of a recognize certification body that follows a code of ethic.
