Most people want to be healthy or at least feel healthy. Smoking is responsible for an array of ailments from cancers to respiratory problems, heart problems, immune system problems to name a few. Here I want to bring your focus onto the different types of cancers that can result from smoking.

For a long time it was thought that cigarettes caused throat and lung cancers only and that was bad enough but the fact of the matter is that your whole body is affected by different aspects of smoking and greatly suffers from it. Some of the chemicals in cigarettes are so harmful that people who normally work around those in an industrial context have to wear protective gear and have a special risk premium paid for people to do it.

Cadmium - A metallic chemical element used in alloys.
This toxic metal causes damage to the liver, kidneys,
and the brain; and stays in your body for years.

Formaldehyde - A colorless pungent gas used in
solution as a disinfectant and preservative. It causes
cancer; damages your lungs, skin and digestive system.
Embalmers use it to preserve dead bodies.

Lead - A heavy bluish-gray metallic chemical element.
This toxic heavy metal causes lead poisoning, which
stunts your growth, and damages your brain. It can
easily kill you.

Propylene Glycol - A sweet hygroscopic viscous liquid
used as antifreeze and as a solvent in brake fluid. The
tobacco industry claims they add it to keep cheap
"reconstituted tobacco" from drying out, but scientists
say it aids in the delivery of nicotine (tobaccos active
drug) to the brain.

Turpentine - A colorless volatile oil. Turpentine is very
toxic and is commonly used as a paint thinner.

From jet fuel to detergent and insecticide the only thing that isn't in there you might say is Trans Fat and Sugar! Not to burst any one's bubble here but some specialty tobacco products are flavoured and have plenty of sugar! Now whats next carbs?!

Here is a list of chemicals found in cigarettes and cigarette smoke.

Acetone
- A flammable, colorless liquid used as a
solvent. It's one of the active ingredients in nail polish
remover. The tobacco industry refuses to say how
acetone gets into cigarettes.

Ammonia - A colorless, pungent gas. The tobacco
industry says that it adds flavor, but scientists have
discovered that ammonia helps you absorb more
nicotine - keeping you hooked on smoking.

Arsenic - A silvery-white very poisonous chemical
element. This deadly poison is used to make
insecticides, and it is also used to kill gophers and rats.

Benzene - A flammable liquid obtained from coal tar
and used as a solvent. This cancer-causing chemical is
used to make everything from pesticides to detergent to
gasoline.

Benzoapyrene - A yellow crystalline carcinogenic
hydrocarbon found in coal tar and cigarette smoke. It's
one of the most potent cancer-causing chemicals in the
world.

Butane - A hydrocarbon used as a fuel. Highly
flammable butane is one of the key ingredients in
gasoline.

More About Health Problems Caused by Smoking

  • Cigarette Smoking enhances the period of ischemia in patients with coronary heart diseases. It also increases the frequency of ischemic attacks in patients unlike in people who do not smoke.
  • Smoking is also responsible for adversely impacting HDL or good cholesterol.
  • Cigarette smoke which people inhale also consists of substances that cause direct damage to the lung tissue thus, diminishing their capability to absorb oxygen.
  • Substances discharged by the immune system as a reaction to cigarette smoke also damage the lung cells.
  • People who smoke experience irritation to the bronchial tree in the lungs, resulting in the formation of excessive mucus and giving rise to the characteristic smokers’ cough. However this condition is non-existent in people who choose to refrain from smoking.
  • People who smoke are likely to be afflicted with bronchitis and emphysema.
  • Smoking has an adverse impact on blood vessels resulting in vasoconstriction. It also enhances the threat for the development of large vessel peripheral vascular disease and inflammation of veins. This is triggered by means of smoking induced atherosclerosis and vasoconstriction. These conditions are aggravated by ailments for example diabetes.
  • Smoking leads to the deposition of fatty deposits in the blood vessels which is referred to as atherosclerosis. The flow of blood slows down which in the process can give rise to thrombus formation and can lead to stroke.
  • Smokers are at a greater threat from strokes than non-smokers. The danger of stroke depends on the number of cigarettes a person smokes. The greater number of cigarettes a person smokes the more he is vulnerable to the dangers of stroke.
  • Habitual smokers frequently develop a continual gruff voice. It occasionally may develop a harmless growth in the voice cords referred to as vocal cord polyps which might require a surgery for removal.
  • Smoking augments the threat of erectile dysfunction since the flow of blood into the penis is obstructed by atherosclerosis. People who smoke tend to have abnormal sperm form, damaged sperm motility, diminished number of sperms and decreased volume of ejaculation.
